In Roma, someone threw red dye in the fontana di Trevi. Then ran away. Which resulted a bit of a photo opportunity until they drained and refilled the fountain. You can read about it in English or Italian. Each article gives a different reason, but both articles state there's no permanent damage, which is the important thing.

I've found another article, from the Corriere site, that has two series of shots. The first shows the whole sequence of the guy throwing the dye in. http://www.corriere.it/cronache/07_ottobre_19/fontana_trevi_rossa.shtml What amazes me is that the people around him don't seem to react at all!
